Frederick Wayne Morrissey (born May 27, 1947) is a former American football player and coach. He played college football as a defensive lineman at the University of Notre Dame from 1967 to 1969, and played professionally as a defensive lineman in the National Football League (NFL) for the Minnesota Vikings in 1970. Morrissey was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the sixth round of the 1970 NFL Draft, and played professionally with the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings for one season.

Playing career

High school and college
Born in Canton, Ohio, Morrissey is a graduate of John Carroll High School in Cleveland. Morrissey first played football for the John Carroll Crusaders from 1960 to 1964 as a defensive end. In 1964, he transferred to the University of Notre Dame. He played college football as a defensive end at Notre Dame from 1965 to 1967. Morrissey graduated from Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Professional playing career
Morrissey played professional football in the NFL for the Minnesota Vikings in 1970.

Coaching career
In 1981, Morrissey served as an assistant coach with the University of Notre Dame. He held the position until 1984, when he was hired by the Purdue University football coaching staff as defensive line coach. Morrissey served with the Purdue football coaching staff for 11 seasons, from 1985 to 1995. In 1995, Morrissey was hired as the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at the University of Pittsburgh.

Morrissey served with the Pitt football coaching staff for six seasons, from 1995 to 2000. He was also the defensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league affiliate, the Albany-Colonie Yankees, in 1999 and 2000.

In 2001, Morrissey was hired as the head football coach at the University of Akron, where he held the position from 2001 to 2007. Morrissey then served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Notre Dame from 2007 to 2009. During his tenure as defensive coordinator, the Notre Dame football defense ranked first nationally in total defense, second in opponent points allowed, and 11th in scoring defense in the 2007 season.

In 2010, Morrissey returned to college coaching as the head football coach at Framingham State University. During his tenure as head football coach, the
Framingham State football team posted an overall record of 12–35 and a conference record of 3–22. In
