Encodes a string or character vector as the RLE algorithm using the byte-wise “Run Length Encoding” algorithm:
The length of runs is encoded using a single byte:
Run length of 0 is encoded as 0x01,
Run length of 1 is encoded as 0x02,
Run length of 2 is encoded as 0x04,
Run length of 3 or more is encoded as 0x08,
Each run of 1 is encoded as 0x10,
Each run of 2 or more is encoded as 0x20
If the input is a character vector, the encoded vector is returned as a vector of values of type double, each corresponding to the length of the run, where the length of the run is the number of characters in the corresponding codeword. The codewords are of type “integer” and in decreasing order of lengths, where the last codeword is of type double (length of zero), having a double value of 1.
If the input is a numeric vector, the encoded vector is returned as a vector of values of type double, each corresponding to the length of the run, where the length of the run is the number of elements in the corresponding codeword.
