The experimental design was a prospective animal study with 16 rabbits. The animals were tested at baseline and at different intervals after the induction of TN using a blinded, two-phase investigation protocol: (i) investigation of the frequency and specificity of TN using high-grade digital subtraction angiography; and (ii) investigation of the contralateral spread of TN using MRI. A vascular loop was positioned around the root entry zone, and the pedicled vein was dissected and removed. The trigeminal nerve was electrically stimulated. The results obtained with digital subtraction angiography revealed a focal contact between the hyperemic changes in the peri-rhinal structures and the induced TN. No contralateral spread of TN was observed in rabbits which were pre-test positive. The induction of TN resulted in hyperemia in the peri-rhinal structures. Despite the relatively small sample size and a lack of histological correlation, the results indicate that MVD is able to eliminate experimentally induced TN in rabbits.”
