Making a truly random choice is surprisingly difficult, if not impossible, but you can pretty close. Services like random.org can help you out, but a desktop application is often a lot more convenient.
gPicker is a small, portable utility that uses the random.org service but lets you do everything from your desktop. It features a minimalistic UI and lacks advanced features, keeping things as simple as possible.
True randomness is hard to find
You might think that it wouldn’t be too difficult to come up with a program that can pick something at random, but this goes against how computers work – everything they do is based on code, and nothing is left to chance.
To get around this limitation, developers have to introduce randomness from an external source. In the case of random.org, it comes from atmospheric noise, which is pretty much impossible to predict.
Simple tool for picking something at random
The application doesn’t need to be installed, so you can just go ahead and launch it after unpacking the archive. To insert more options, click the plus button and type their name. You can add as many as you like and remove any of them later.
When everything is ready, just click the dice button to have the program pick one of the options. All the other ones will be removed from the list, but there is no way to restore them if you want to use the same items again.
Basic but useful random picker
There are plenty of situations when you might need to make a random decision, and using a service like random.org is one of the fairest ways to go about it. gPicker makes this process a bit easier, allowing you to insert the options and make a selection directly from your desktop.

This study aimed to determine if there is a difference between all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in patients with coronary artery disease. The study utilized a retrospective review of a prospective database of over 3000 patients who were diagnosed with coronary artery disease and underwent myocardial revascularization. Patients were identified by using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision codes. A total of 3117 patients were included in the study, of whom 2118 (68.1%) were female and the mean age was 64 ± 12 years. During a mean follow-up period of 3.9 ± 1.6 years, 947 patients died, including 634 due to cardiovascular causes. In this study, there were significant differences between all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in patients with coronary artery disease. The cumulative survival free of all-cause mortality at 5, 10, and 15 years was, respectively, 82.4%, 78.4%, and 72.1%. In patients with coronary artery disease, the cumulative survival free of cardiovascular mortality at 5, 10, and 15 years was, respectively, 85.2%, 81.6%, and 77.2%. The hazard ratios for all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality were 4.23 (95% confidence interval, 2.27 to 7.84) and 2.66 (95% confidence interval, 1.74 to 4.05), respectively. Cardiovascular mortality was markedly higher in men than in women (hazard ratio, 4.17; 95% confidence interval, 2.10 to 8.28; p ]( Kyrgyzstan, February 2014.

After this chapter, you should be able to use the gPicker application to help you make random decisions.Electrochemical oxidation of vinasse wastewater using magnesium/TiO2-modified carbon fiber electrode.
Vinasse wastewater, an organic fertilizer by-product, was electrolyzed by means of magnesium/TiO2-modified carbon fiber (M/TiO2-CF) electrode at different applied current densities of 25, 50, 100 and 250 mA/cm2. To investigate the oxidation mechanism, different analyses were performed by using UV-vis spectrophotometer, FT-IR and EDAX. At the same applied current density, the concentration of all organic compounds in the electrolyte solution was reduced, and the removal efficiencies of organic matter, total nitrogen, and ammonia nitrogen were up to 99.9%, 79.3%, and 96.9%, respectively. BOD5/COD removal efficiency was only 51.1%, and the COD removal efficiency was 54.8%. The results suggested that the electrochemical oxidation of vinasse wastewater was based on the following mechanism: (1) the organic compounds in vinasse wastewater were oxidized to CO2, H2O and inorganic salts; (2) H2O and inorganic salts were converted to humus. The optimized electrolysis conditions were as follows: current density = 250 mA/cm2, electrolyte volume = 3 mL, electrolyte volume = 1.5 mL, electrolyte volume = 2.5 mL, Na2SO4 volume = 0.5 mL, time = 1.5 h, time = 3 h. The degradation of organic compounds by means of M/TiO2-CF electrode can be an attractive and cost-effective technology for the treatment of industrial organic wastes.

It’s a great tool for generating random names in any language.
The application is small, self-explanatory and easy to use, but it does have a few important limitations:
1) No customization. You can pick the type of the name and the length, but you can’t use one of your favorite templates.
2) No multilanguage support.
3) No the ability to pick the number of names.
4) No the ability to pick the number of words, just the names.

Need a simple random number generator?
gPicker is a program you can use to choose a random number in any number of formats and languages. It will make a random selection from a list of options, and will keep the list of options you enter for future use.

Random List Generator for Common Communication Texts
If you are a single word, a sentence, a short paragraph, or a whole document of words, gPicker will generate a random text of the same length as your input.

LazyRandomText Generator will fill the given text with random text. This is a very handy tool to prepare documents or to have a more natural sounding language.
