. « , Â »  Â.In bid to combat the cost of train travel, the government announced last night that it wants to cap all fares at 15p in the Greater Manchester area.
The plans have been revealed by Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin, who unveiled a list of new measures to boost competition and cut down on the public subsidy.
The bill caps on the new fares for commuter and suburban passengers will be imposed by the Department for Transport in a new rail tariff system.
He also said that in a bid to cut down on spiralling train fares, he will establish an independent regulator that will be given the power to set fares.
He told the Transport Select Committee that fares should be set by a regulator, saying: “Travelling on the train in the Greater Manchester conurbation is often felt to be very expensive.
“A cap on fares would help to reduce their cost for people. That would make the system fairer and help make the rail services sustainable.”
He also backed the new north rail franchise that covers the four northern metropolitan boroughs of Manchester, Liverpool, Stockport and Wigan.
The new franchise, which is worth up to £550 million over its lifetime, will run until 2023.Tesco launches ‘junk food’ label

Tesco has launched a new label for junk food that defines it as high in fat, sugar and salt, and as being “unhealthy”. The new front of Tesco’s own-brand range was launched at a press conference at the Oxford Street store in London yesterday.
The range includes ice-cream, snacks, chocolate and soft drinks – with all but one of the foods containing more than 10 per cent of their nutritional content from fat, sugar or salt.
The label was introduced to help people make better choices, a spokeswoman said.
The label will “help people to make more informed choices about the food that they eat. We hope that it will help make it easier for consumers to choose foods that are healthier, and will encourage consumers to look at the nutritional content of food that they buy.
“We are launching the label ahead of Nutrition Month, which runs from May until the end of the year.”
The junk food label will go with other front-of-pack information on calories, sugar,
