## Getting Started with Photoshop
To start creating your own image manipulations, open an image in Photoshop and select Edit⇒Preferences⇒General to open the Preferences dialog box, as shown in Figure 2-1. Here’s how to create a new document and import an image:
* Click the New Document icon to create a new image.

* Click the Import button to display the Import dialog box, which offers several file formats. If you need to convert a JPEG or other image format into Photoshop, use the Save for Web & Devices command from the File menu.

* Click the Browse button to open a dialog box that enables you to navigate to the directory where the image is saved or locate another file.
* Click Open to add the new image to the Photoshop document, as shown in Figure 2-2.
* In the Import dialog box (refer to Figure 2-1), you can choose Import from Files, which enables you to add more images to your document or use a folder.

* If you want to rename the file or change its format, click the Import Options icon and then select the Import Options dialog box (refer to Figure 2-1). You can change the file name, apply a layer style, and apply your own effects, such as the ones that come with Photoshop.

Installation
The program is installed directly into the hard drive. You can install it into your hard drive either by downloading the program to a CD or DVD, or by installing it directly from a USB drive.

Channel Mask allows you to apply the mask to only a channel. This is useful for combining several channels, like the black and white mask above. You can then set the color for a channel by selecting the single mask channel.

Getting Started
Open the tutorials (main page). On the upper left side, you’ll see the Google search box. Type in “Open> Adobe Photoshop CS5” and press Enter.
In the lower left hand corner, click the New Layer button. The default setting for all layers is active. You can see the active layer by clicking on the layer thumbnail in the Layers panel. You can also choose from multiple layers by clicking on the + button. This button also offers a way to hide layers, which is helpful when you’re trying to concentrate on just one layer. You can toggle layers on and off by clicking the eye next to the layer thumbnail in the Layers panel.
A Layer Manager is your best tool for managing your layers. You can double-click any layer to bring up the Layer Manager. Click the down arrow next to the layers thumbnail to open the list of layers. If you don’t see your layer on the list, make sure you have activated it. Activate layers by checking the box next to the layer in the Layers panel (see image below).
You can close the Layer Manager by clicking the X in the upper right hand corner of the Layer Manager window.
Creating Brushes
To make a new brush set, click the New Brush Set button in the top bar of the Layers panel. A new window will open.
Click the plus sign (+) button to add a new brush to the set. You can either click on one of the preset brushes or select any existing brush that you like.
