A US group has dubbed the Google Fiber experiment in Kansas City as a “disaster” in a letter to the city’s government.
“If Google Fiber is going to work, it is going to have to work in the face of extreme community opposition,” said the letter from eight Kansas City residents.
“The history of Google Fiber in Kansas City is a disaster: from the failure of public consultation, to the utter lack of transparency, to the choice of a company that seems to have been co-opted to serve their corporate ambitions.”
The letter was the first sign of opposition from Kansas City’s major telecom firms, and comes as Google Fiber is due to begin commercial services on Monday.
It is billed as the US’s first true “superfast” broadband service, offering speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second – more than 10 times the speed of the fastest DSL connection currently available in the city.
Google is offering the service in a few areas of Kansas City – one of which will become available to the public on Monday – and has signed up 3,000 customers.
But the letter authors accuse Google of not fully engaging with the community when it was launching its trial service in a handful of neighbourhoods.
“Although we have been given ample reason to doubt that it is possible to provide low-cost and high-quality broadband service using Google Fiber technology, we are confident that it can be done in the Kansas City area,” the letter said.
“However, the community has been left with nothing.”
The letter writers pointed out that Kansas City was already set to implement a universal fiber broadband network known as KC-NET, which had been the subject of extensive community consultation.
They argued that, because of this, the city was in no way a good place for Google to try to install a new network.
“We do not believe that Google Fiber should have been chosen for Kansas City,” the letter continued.
“We have only recently learned the extent to which Google Fiber has failed to respect the community and the democratic process.
